The 4MA1 International GCSE Mathematics A syllabus is part of the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE qualification. Here's a brief history and development of this qualification:
Predecessor (Before 2017):
. Before 2017, Pearson Edexcel offered International GCSE Mathematics (Specification A and Specification B) under different codes.
. The older syllabus followed a structure similar to the UK GCSE but was designed for international students.
Introduction of 4MA1 (2017 - Present):
. In 2017, Pearson Edexcel revised its IGCSE qualifications to align with the UK’s reformed GCSE system.
. 4MA1 replaced the older 4MA0 syllabus, bringing in some changes to content and assessment.
Introduction of the 9-1 Grading System
. Before 2017, Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics used the A-G grading system*.
. The 4MA1 syllabus introduced the 9-1 grading system, aligning with UK GCSE reforms.
Syllabus Adjustments
. Some topics were restructured, and a few advanced topics were either moved or refined.
. The foundation and higher-tier options were removed, leaving a single-tier system.
. Paper codes 4MA1/3H changed to 4MA1/1H
. Paper codes 4MA1/4H changed to 4MA1/2H
Assessment Structure
. The format remained two papers, each worth 50% of the final grade.
. No coursework—100% exam-based assessment.
The difference between 4MA1 and 4MB1
4MA1: This is the International GCSE (IGCSE) Mathematics A syllabus. It is the standard and more widely taken IGCSE Mathematics qualification. It includes topics covering number, algebra, geometry, statistics, and probability.
4MB1: This is the International GCSE (IGCSE) Further Pure Mathematics syllabus. It is designed for students who have a strong understanding of mathematics and wish to study more advanced topics, such as calculus, matrices, and complex numbers. It is typically taken by students who want to pursue higher-level mathematics in A-levels or university.
4MA1 = IGCSE Mathematics A (core syllabus, taken by most students)
4MB1 = IGCSE Further Pure Mathematics (advanced syllabus, for stronger students)
